Joe C. Trees's copy with his small signature on the front flyleaf. Joseph Clifton Trees (1870-1943) was a Pittsburgh philanthropist who was successful in the oil business (with partner Michael L. Benedum) and who had strong ties to the University of Pittsburgh. Trees is the namesake for several pieces of architecture in the Pittsburgh area including the Benedum-Trees Building and Pitt's Trees Hall.
