Don't let the title fool you: this book isn't limited to the topic of writing gay erotica. Originally published as "Lavender Blue", this updated and expanded edition covers everything from writing technique to the reality of publishing.
Eighner begins with an entertaining and insightful scene illustrating an editor's typical day. Since editors choose which submissions are published, this realistic depiction will be very helpful to the beginner. The author also lists the essential tools a writer needs in order to succeed, as well as those issues the beginner often worries over without cause.
There are chapters on writing basics: "Learning to Write for Publication", "Techniques of Fiction", and "A Writer's Guide to Style". He addresses the topics of structure, dialogue, and revision, and also "The Erotic Scene".
Other chapters focus on publication, including advice on the market and the law. Finally, he discusses the process of publication in the chapter "From Manuscript to Print."
After years of publishing short non-fiction, I decided to break into the more challenging fiction market. When an idea for a gay erotic novella popped into my head, I searched for the most highly recommended book on the subject. After reading Eighner's book, I've added it to my list of 'must have' books for a writer's library.
The scope of this book transcends the topic of gay erotica, offering straightforward advice on writing and publishing in a very down-to-earth manner. Most books I purchase are discarded once I've finished them, and only the most helpful remain on my shelf for future reference. This is one book I have no intention of ever letting go.
