Excerpt from Electric Power Transmission: Principles and Calculations, Including a Revision of Overhead Electric Power Transmission A portion of the material which was originally contained in the Appendix has been incorporated in the text; but much of the first edition has been entirely omitted, either because its inclusion is no longer necessary owing to the rapid strides that have been made of late years in the general knowledge of electrical power transmission, or because it has been replaced by new material believed to be of more value to the student or practical engineer. The chapter describing the Thury system of transmission by continuous currents has been retained with only slight changes and additions. It has not been deemed expedient to omit this entirely because, although few American engineers have taken the trouble to familiarize themselves with this system of trans mission, there are conditions under which it has certain in disputable advantages which European engineers have not been slow to recognize.
