Mais je songeais aussi que la plate - forme en pente douce du c???t??? qui domine la plaine de Phocide, en face du Parnasse, pouvait cacher bien des marbres sons 'son'???pais tapis d'herbes et de ch???nes - verts; il semblait qu'il y e???t une assez profonde cou che de terre entre les murs ??? fleur de sol qui sillonnaient le temenos. A travers les buissons ???pineux se trouvaient amon cel???es des pierres antiques taill???es, parmi lesquelles pouvait se'dissifiidler plus d'un'texte ???pigraphique. Du c???t??? oppos??? la 'i'nontag'ne ???tait abrupte, 'et la pente tr???s rude tombait en pr???cipice jusqua un torrent profond; mais cette pente m???me ???tait couvmte en beaucoup d'endroits de gazon, ce qui d???rion???ait une assez grande ???paisseur de terre v???g???tale o??? pourraient avoir ???t??? retenus bien des fragments du temple ???crodl??? le sol ???tait du reste partout sem??? de d???bris c???ra miques. Enfin l'inscription publi???e par M. Lolling, relative ??? 'un trait??? d'alliance entre les Phocidiens et les B???otiens, prouvait que le temple avait're???u en d???p???t des actes impor tantsf La situation exceptionnelle de l'???difice, au sommet d'une montagne aujourd'hui inaccessible aux chars, l'???loignement des'villages, l'abandon des lieux, que fr???quentent seuls quel ques bergers, laissaient penser que les ruines avaient ???t??? plut???t envahies par les terres que pill???es par les hommes.
