Fernandez de Moratin destaco por ser un hombre inteligente y culto, de caracter introvertido y dificil, formado en la cultura francesa y en la estetica neoclasica. Escribio poesias satiricas y tambien otras en los diversos generos de la lirica clasica: epistolas, odas, sonetos y romances. Su produccion mis conocida es El si de las niñas (1801). En ella, Moratin trata un problema muy de la epoca: el de los matrimonios de conveniencia que imponian muchos padres a sus hijos. La comedia se ajusta a la regla neoclasica de las tres unidades: la obra desarrolla una sola historia (accion), que ocurre en un solo escenario (lugar) y durante un solo dia (tiempo). El Si de las niñas no fue solamente un sonoro exito al ser puesta en escena: fue la obra de mayor aceptacion de su tiempo y casi con seguridad el mayor acontecimiento teatral de todo el siglo en que se presento. Sin embargo, levanto odios y entusiasmos. En 1815, la Inquisicion encontro motivos suficientes para prohibir esta comedia. La prohibicion se renovo en 1823, de modo que durante cerca de veinte años se vieron privados de ver en escena la obra maestra de Moratin. Cuando se levanto la prohibicion y la obra pudo volver a estrenarse, en 1834, lo hizo con cortes debidos a la censura
