Exhibited at the beginning of the 20th century at a museum in Graz/Styria, the painting was regarded as a copy of Leonardo's painting. Sold after the war by its owner, the Count Attems, it fell into oblivion. Art historian and acknowledged expert on da Vinci, Prof. Ernst Ullmann of the University of Leipzig, proved, with the assistance of noted Viennese restorator Ernst Lux, that the painting is in fact the concetto (draft) of Leonardo's masterpiece ?Virgin of the rocks?, existing in two Versions in Paris and London.
