Hardcover. Small 4to. Not paginated [ approximately 84 pages ]. Light yellow cloth with red and black lettering to spine, black lettering and red embellishments to upper board. b&w, duo-tone and colour illustrations, fold-out. Coloured endpapers. Housed in illustrated paper covered slipcase. Recounts the tale of Lady Wen-chi, abducted from her father's home and taken to Inner Mongolia where she forced into marriage with the leader of a nomad tribe, and the dilemmas that beset her years later when an offer of ransom promised her freedom. There is much of the Confucian parable in it, dealing with issues of duty and family, loyalty to ancestors and the State, and the power of Fate. Text and paintings from a fourteenth century scroll now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art Lettering to spine lightly rubbed, a few very faint spots to boards, page edges a little dusty, otherwise a tight, VG+ copy in VG slipcase. (Slipcase a little chafed at corners and edges. )

Near Fine in Slipcase jacket. 4to-over 9¾"-12" tall. Approx 80pp/illus in b&w and color. Spine dull. Wen-chi was abducted from her scholar-statesman father's home (Ts'ai Yung) in present-day Honan, about 195 A.D. She was taken by the Hsiung-nu (basically, the Huns) into Inner Mongolia and was made the wife of the Commander-in-Chief of one of the nomad's wings. Clean.
