The volume, however, though small, and published in a cheap form, has attained to a size which he did not anticipate, a circumstance which may in some mea sure defeat his object; still he is inclined to think that there is very little in it which does not, more or less, tend to throw some light either on the people or on the country of which it treats. It may be said that there is no need of books on America an assertion which, as regards certain classes, may be true; but many of the books on that country are expensive, and no single work on Illinois, with which the author is acquainted, enters sufficiently into details for the poor emigrant.
