This cut-out makes up into a pencil case. The original coffin was made for a priest of the god Amen-Re, who was buried around 1050 BC at Thebes. His body was preserved from decay by mummification; a process whereby the inner parts of the body were removed and the body was dried out and then padded and bandaged before being placed in the coffin. The face of the dead priest, and his decorated wig, have been findly modelled on the lid. The hands, which have been carved in relief, are crossed over the chest on top of a beaded collar hung with lotus flowers. The lower half of the lid is divided into panels decorated with figures of gods and symbols.
