An agent was dispatched to Constantinople, with authorization to spend money in bribery. Furthermore, the Sultan's jealousy had been aroused at the display of power in 13 matters Egyptian by his western neighbors. His attitude was at first, 14. hostile to the demand of the two Governments. 15 But with the joining of Germany and Austria, and later, 16 Russia and Italy, AO in the demand, the Sultan realized that he was helpless and refused to support Ismail, and on June 25, 1879, in a telegram addressed to "Son Altesse Ismail Pasha, Ex-Khe'dive," he declared Ismail 17 deposed, and nominated Tewfik to succeed him at once. This was a double concession on his part, for after at length agreeing to depose Ismail, he had insisted upon naming Ismail's younger brother Khedive, in accordance with Mohammedan law, but in violation of an existing agreement with the Khedflyal house, purchased some time previously, as we have seen.
