The one thing I can always say about Jerry Spinelli is that every book is completely different. He doesn't have a consistent style. That makes it a little difficult to know what you are in for when you pick up one of his new titles. I am a huge fan of "Maniac Magee" and "Loser", among others he has written, but I can't say I will necessarily be adding this title to my favorites. It is a quick read and the characters are likable, but they are a little too quirky to relate to in real life. The reader is expected to love these characters but I think the writing doesn't necessarily give enough depth to really get to know the characters well enough to love them. This book follows the recent style authors have adopted consisting of sparseness of words, which is the best way I know how to put it. The idea behind the story was creative, but there wasn't enough substance to really make it an exceptional read. Perhaps younger readers will enjoy it more and be able to relate more easily to the emotions felt by the young characters through their various frustrations in dealing with the adults in their lives. Overall, it is worth having if you are a huge fan of Spinelli, but I would recommend others of his books.
