if you have read Things Fall Apart (Achebe), you should read this book. If you are interested in global in/outsider perspectives on feminism, you should read this book. Efuru is about a woman establishing her autonomy within the bounds of her culture. by no means a radical peice, it was nonetheless controversial when it was first published in 1966 - as a response to Achebe's work - with the intent of fleshing out the previously one-dimensional portrayals of Igbo women. as a westerner, as a lover of literature, it is not the most engaging read. Its a straightforward, stylistically simple plot narrative. Nwapa hersef has stated that she is not a writer, but a voice saying something which needs to be said. And that's true. Its an important book, which at times can be tough to get through, but remains worth the struggle.
