Seller's Description:
Very Good. Hardcover. Viking, NY, 1967; 1st Eng translation. including 11 prints by William Nicholson; with dust cover of paper, slightly furled; dark red cloth with inscribed ER device in mint condition; x+312pp with index, biblio, 3 genealogies. A fresh and very sympathetic full-scale portrait of Edward VII, one of the most attractive characters in modern European history, and of the high society of his time, wealthy, lavish, corrupt, discreet, with little interest in art and much in life: the Edwardians. The special virtue of Jul-lian's approach is that it looks at Edward and his times from the Continental point of view. As a Frenchman, the author relates him to the European and world scene even more than to the domestic scene, and writes with a Gallic elan and irreverence which make for lively reading. Queen Victoria's fat son, who lived to the age of sixty as Prince of Wales under his mama's stern tutelage and then became king for a brief nine years, was cousin or uncle to all the important crowned heads of Europe, and through these kinsmen history was shaped in a far more personal way than we ordinarily remember. As Malcolm Cowley said in his report to the publishers: "I found it a fascinating book, brilliantly written. There are funny, often scabrous details....But the book is not just a collection of scandals. Philippe Jullian is interested in political history and makes us belive that Edward did play an important part in the system of alliances that led to the Great War, though his aim was always to preserve the peace, and he did preserve it during his lifetime." While making its contribution to political history, the book, by the very nature of its protagonist, is pre-eminently readable. Edward had a passion for bridge, golf, and horses as well as for beautiful women; he loved people, and he loved travel. His American tour as Prince of Wales was wildly successful, and his open-handed friendship with Americans in London, when other British aristocrats scorned them, is famous. His galas and cavalcades, the frequent royal trekkings all over Europe, his coronation (which had to be postponed when he fell sick), and finally his funeral were all imbued with a pomp and circumstance now almost lost to the world, and worth remembering. 8½x5¾"......We ship daily from our Bookshop.
