For this reason alone, this release from the Bavarian Radio Chorus and director Howard Arman is welcome; one might hear some of these songs on British choral programs from time to time, but beyond Britain, they are far from familiar. The chorus has clearly been well-drilled by Arman and achieves good choral English. Much of the music will be novel and delightful for those who haven't heard it. From the Bavarian Highlands, Op. 27, occupies an interesting space between folk song arrangement and original music. Elgar wrote to his publisher that the texts were partially adapted from folk music (by C. Alice Elgar) but that the music was his own. The songs have square, catchy choral melodies accompanied by piano, and the work proved popular enough that Elgar later orchestrated it.
