They are rather intended, as musical variations ought at least to be intended, to develop the mean ings that are latent in the themes. I have a reason, or at least an excuse, for adopting this form. The book is about the unity of knowledge, and about methods for establishing that unity; and if I, treated the methods systematically, in the sense of elaborating them singly, each for itself, I should not be able to dwell upon the unity which, between them, they are there to maintain.
