On his latest release he brings together several former and current members of Ancient Future, namely Randy Mead on flutes, electronic wind instrument, and background synthesizer, Matthew Montfort on guitar and charrango, Benjy Wertheimer on tabla and assorted percussion, and Rick Henderson on sarod and tamboura. Shelley Phillips from Orison adds oboe and English horn, with Mark Eubanks on bassoon and alto sax. The simple but well-constructed melodies draw heavily on the Western folk tradition, but with an obvious debt to Indian music as well as other ethnic sources, all tied together by David Michael's assortment of stringed instruments, which include guitars, harp, zither, and viola-da-gamba. Standout cuts are "Bright Morning," with an infectious guitar melody picked up by flute and then oboe over a lively tabla rhythm, and the seven-minute "Reflections of a Journey," which builds over chugging rhythm guitars and various wind instruments, breaking into a robust viola and trombone country dance.
