Funny, sarcastic, dark, absurd, and truthful, Boyle's tale uses Hiro, a half Japanese illegal immigrant/fugitive to skewer the American way, which, Hiro realizes, is to "have two of everything." The story merges Hiro and his struggle to literally survive the Georgian swamp and its citizens, and Ruth Dershowitz, a spoiled, insecure wanna-be writer wasting a summer at Thanatopsis House, her rich boyfriend's mom's Artist Colony. Boyle is a master at making us laugh at American traits that should also make us hang our heads in shame.
