All too often, performances of Dvorák's trio are too much in the middle; the slow sections are too fast and the fast sections too slow, making everything seem like a dull moderato. The performance heard here by the Guarneri Trio Prague, celebrating 20 years together, does a superior job of capturing these two contrasting temperaments. Unfortunately, there are significant shortcomings in other areas of the performance. Intonation is chief among these problems and is most noticeable when the violin and cello play together in unison or octaves. Articulation and ensemble problems become very evident in fast, busy passages, where the playing between the three musicians is simply not together and quite sloppy.
