In this recording by Germany's Ensemble Acht, Dvorák sounds especially fresh and lyrical partially because of the performance and partially because of the transcription. Yes, transcription because the version of Dvorák's Czech Suite on this disc was arranged for Ensemble Acht from the orchestral original by Ulf-Guido Schafer, the clarinetist of Ensemble Acht. And as an octet, that is, as a piece of chamber music, Dvorák's Czech Suite sounds fresher because it sounds like music that could and should be played out-of-doors and more lyrical because there is only one player per part, each singing the lines together in bucolic harmony. As for the String Quintet, it is in the form Dvorák gave it and just as fresh and lyrical for all that....
