This memoir is, I think, an extended version of the author's autobiographical essay that appeared in Harper's magazine ca. 2009. I know Ben; he's a quirky guy (as he knows): In his article he recounted his solitary, exploratory bent and his lifelong fascination with playing soldier and with long guns, due to which I affectionately call him "Rifle Boy." The memoir certainly goes beyond the article, and seems to attempt to reconcile, via narrative, the traumas (all occurring within the space of the same several-year period, half a decade or so) of his wartime service in iraq (two tours) and the deaths of his parents. Ben is extremely thoughtful, introspective and literate--all qualities displayed in abundance in his book. Yet, for all that, the memoir lacks oomph, interest, much of any kind of compelling insight or emotion. Frankly, it's as dusty-dry as the title--"Dust to Dust" suggests--just as I found the earlier Harper's piece to be, as well as another one that appeared in a Michigan literary publication. And you'd think much the opposite would be the case, given the potential drama, loss and hazard inherent in his experiences, especially those of wartime, of the "pacification" of Ramadi, etc. It's all rather bloodless--perhaps that's Ben's way of coping with blood. If there was a way to interweave within the narrative Ben's almost obsessive-compulsive efforts to promote his artwork-including not only this book but films and photographic exhibitions, as well as acting stints--wherein he has played "hotheaded" characters that seem to genuinely channel his own personal anger and turmoil--perhaps the memoir might be more gripping, interesting, worth all the effort of writing it and promoting it in, now, a two-year-plus book tour.
