It's been said that many a Scot has learned their history from Nigel Tranter. I confess to being one. This is one of his lighter and more whimsical historical novels set in 500 AD, well worth reading if you're hungry to tie up all those loose historical ends with plausible Celtic knots; less so for the reader looking for hard historical facts. I would recommend nearly anything Nigel Tranter has written about Scotland, including this book, which for me was somewhat frivolous but a worthwhile read about the pre-Columba Druid-to-Christian shift, giving substance and connectivity to key historical figures.
