People who consider Chinese and Japanese Americans to be model minorities would realize that it is the fear of genocide that sustains this behavior. As a child growing up during the early 1960's in San Francisco's Chinatown, I heard stories of how Chinese communities were burned down and residents driven out. One of those who hated Chinese was Jack London, Oakland writer, who is known for the story of SEAWOLF. I didn't understand why London hated Chinese. Jean's book identifies the mind set of people like Jack London and she cites multiple primary sources of this anti-Chinese behavior that occurred after the California Gold Rush. It will probably be the source material for a future Chinese version of Arthur Haileys ROOTS....Yes, for those newly arrived Chinese like Jeremy Lin, professional basketball player, and his Black American basketball friends; they will find the graphics very disturbing...especially the one identified as "Coons and Chinee". Even more disturbing is Jean's documentation of the massacre of native American Indians and its relationship to the arrival of Chinese railroad workers. Kudos to Jean for her scholarly documentation of this unpleasant ugly part of California history.

Excellent account of Chinese history
This book reveals the realities of immigrant Chinese in northern California and the discrimination they had to deal with. Portions may be emotionally difficult to accept.
