This is a terrific book by Jack Hamm, but it is for people that are already graphic artists and cartoonists. It gives advanced techniques on how to add special graphics to your artwork. For example, it shows you how to create an entire figure in an existing face so that one can see two separate images inside the one. Sort of like the image of a woman's face that, if turned upside down, looks like an old man.
In my opinion, this is not for children, or beginner's at all, but it doesn't claim or profess to be. There is as much writing and text on the pages as there are graphics, because this book is geared to teach special methods of advanced conversions. There is even an example of how to make a face using only eyes for all of the lines. It is quite amazing actually.
Someone that is attempting to learn to draw, or one that barely does more than stick figures, or young children that are not great readers, should avoid this book for now. I recommend that one learn how to read AND how to draw, before attempting to tackle this particular book. Otherwise, one may get discouraged and leave the book collecting dust on a shelf. Jack Hamm's other book, "Cartooning the Head & Figure" is geared a slight bit more for beginners, but one must still enjoy reading (and probably be at least a teenager).
However, once you have become great at cartooning and accustomed to seeing lines and lines of text paragraphs, then this is a must have book if you want to add EXTRA SPECIAL effects to your drawings, because this book definitely teaches you an enormous amount of VERY ADVANCED special techniques. I chose to write this review, because I don't think that the synopsis gives the buyer a real clue as to what this book is really intended to do. Definitely buy it, but not until you are more advanced at drawing and even then, only if you enjoy reading.
