Seller's Description:
None. Very Good. An uncommon first edition, three volume set of Thomas Davies work of literary criticism. First edition. Complete in three volumes. Volumes I and III are dated 1784, whilst volume II is dated 1783, matching the information on the British Library's English Short Title Catalogue (EST citation number T090854). With a list of subscribers to the front of volume I. Illustrated with a frontispiece of Thomas Betterton to volume I. Written by Thomas Davies the Scottish author and bookseller. This work of literary criticism discusses the work of William Shakespeare and other eminent writers. Having previously written a biography of the actor and playwright David Garrick, in this work Davies draws upon his knowledge of the theatre and explores the representations of these famous fictional characters by notable actors and comedians. The work was published by the author, and then sold in his London shop. With the blindstamp of 'Wigan Free Public Library' to the title pages are front free-endpaper of each volume. Rebacked, the work is bound in a uniform calf binding. A interesting work exploring the work of the notable actors of the 17th century and the work of several notable playwrights. Rebacked. In a full calf binding. Externally, smart. Light rubbing to the head and tail of the spine. Patches of rubbing to the boards and extremities have resulted in a small amount of loss to the to leather. Light offsetting and spotting to the front and rear pastedowns and endpapers of each volume. Bookplate to the tail of the rear pastedown of volume II. Front and rear hinges of each volume are strained but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Page are generally clean with patches of spotting, mainly to the first and last pages. Light offsetting to the title page of volume I, caused by the title page. Very Good.
