When it came time to find a band to score the 1987 film update of the '50s cop show Dragnet, Art of Noise must have leapt immediately to mind. The experimental new wave instrumentalists specialized in flashy electronic remixes of pre-existing music sources, and they had only a year earlier turned Henry Mancini's theme for "Peter Gunn," another fedora-wearing TV crimebuster, into a top 10 smash in the UK charts. It was no surprise, then, when Anne Dudley and company produced a slick, radio-ready techno version of the theme song from the original show. It's a catchy mesh of orchestral samples, synthesized noise and clips of dialogue from the film, which starred Tom Hanks and Dan Akroyd. This single is uncoventionally sequenced, opening with it's most experimental remix ("Arthur Baker Mix") and concluding with the more accessible radio edit. That version ("Art of Noise 7" mix") is also extended into a slightly more adventurous "Art of Noise 12" Mix." The only non-"Dragnet" track is "Acton Art" which is pretty representative of the band's instrumental material. ~ Evan Cater, Rovi
