Seller's Description:
Small 4to. Burgundy and beige paper over boards with gilt spine lettering, pictorial dust jacket. xiii, 280pp. Fine/near fine. Tight and bright first edition chronicling the 1993 (to cite jacket front panel) "proceedings of a Moot Court of Military Appeal to hear the case of Dr. Samuel A. Mudd...." Interestingly, Mudd was represented by F. LEE BAILEY, and a fine, archival decorative-edged bookplate signed by him in black ballpoint is affixed to the front flyleaf. (Bailey, 1933-2021, was a criminal defense attorney famed for representing Sam Sheppard, Albert DeSalvo, Patty Hearst, O.J. Simpson and other celebrity clients. ) Above this is a matching bookplate signed in black fineline by RICHARD D. MUDD (1901-2002), the grandson of Samuel Mudd and likewise a physician; he spent decades attempting to get his grandfather's conviction pardoned. Truly an extraordinary copy.
