Part of the famous Dr. Jazz series that constituted a group of valuable radio broadcasts hosted by Aime Gauvin, a staff announcer for New York City radio station WMGM, this wonderful set features trumpeter Bobby Hackett leading slightly different sextets on six occasions, all live at Lou Terrasi's jazz club. The front line of trombonist Vic Dickenson and clarinetist Gene Sedric served Hackett well, even if the latter was a tad old fashioned. The horns are all in fine form throughout, and if the sound is a touch tinny, it has been well-remastered and is entirely listenable. At a time when bop had made its mark, it is remarkable how untouched these players were by modern trends. Instead, they performed, with abandon, tunes that were popular in an earlier generation, but which never lost their charm. Opening with "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans" and moving to the seminal "Original Dixieland One Step" and classics such as "Stars Fell on Alabama," there is a relaxed and joyous quality that permeates virtually every piece. Dickenson is near-perfect with his lazy sound, slurped legato, and amazing technique, while Hackett trumpets his usual gorgeous tone. These are fine sessions and should satisfy those who enjoy the sounds of Dixieland played live by some of the best of the trade. ~ Steven Loewy, Rovi
