There is a funny thing about books you read involving rivers: often, as in many stories, the waterways, valleys and gorges are seen as dark and ominous places, yet thinking back to personal times and experiences on these we realise they have been light and happy locations filled with the fondest of memories. Over six decades, more than 10 000 of us have flocked to The River. Like migrating swallows we have returned each summer for our pilgrimage to the sea. Each has tasted his own form of victory and on many occasions been humbled in defeat. With hopes and dreams, each of us has accepted the challenge of "The Dusi" and often discovered limits we didn't know existed. This race is hard but it transcends pettiness and teaches lessons that serve us well thorughout our lives. In the salt waters of the final analysis we develop a pride in the achievement of our potential whilst forming loyalties and lifelong bonds of friendship that mould and temper our characters.
