The book tells the story of how a young girl who attends school can speak in both Spanish and English. She finds it difficult because at home she is not allowed to speak English as her parents do not understand, and at school she is not allowed to speak Spanish because her friends do not understand. All she wants is to be known as a little girl and the bright vivid pictures and large text explain how she feels about having to talk different languages in different situations, as well as attracting a young reader to look and study the pictures, inspiring their imaginative side.
Her best friend then asks her to teach her some Spanish and from this request she decides not just to teach her friend but her class as well. The whole book shows us how we do not always recognise how inventive children can be on solving their own problems. It can also be used when a child is feeling confused and conflicted about where they stand at home and in the community.
