I went into the first, "Worlds on Fire" expecting an official prequel, to which it was. Telling a story before the events of the game, then splitting off into what I thought would be two stories. The books telling the tale of what was going on in other parts of Mars City while the game was going on. That sadly is not what happened. Book two continues the story, slightly back tracking to reveal some new events and even a new area. However this new area is useless and not needed, it adds nothing to the story. The main events taking up the big portion of the book is actually a bit of a bore with not as much suspense or mystery from the first book. The events as they unfold reveal that this is not taking place during the game, it rewrites the game itself. The book sadly throws the game out the window and just tells its own story.
A quite disappointing experience if you were thinking it continued a prequel story, but it does not. It is its own story set in Doom 3 style, with many demons missing along the way. Only if you must find out what happened to some characters than it's worth a read, but I would recommend only the first book and then playing the game.
