Batida is a stage name for Angolan/Portuguese DJ Pedro Coquenão (who, with no shortage of names, is also known as DJ Mpula). Batida the album was released in the spring of 2012, and garnered critical praise for its energetic and creative blend of vintage Angolan tracks from the '70s with the loops and beats of electronic dance music. Dois is the follow-up album, predominately produced and recorded in Coquenão's own garage studio over a two-year period, and it follows a similar creative course, blending Afro-house, kuduro, benga, and semba with samples from old Angolan movies, Afro-beat standards, and the Clash into a dancefloor DJ mixing bowl that doesn't shy away from social commentary. It's an impressive hat trick, spotlighting both the old and new Africa in a bright, shiny take on music and its use, interpretation, and delivery in the 21st century. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi
