Mark Doty's Dog Years is a perceptive, beautifully written memoir about the author's two dogs that becomes a meditation on aging, loss, grief and recuperation. Any dog lover will experience shocks of recognition; Doty's book will also go a long way towards enlightening others as to why the dog is our "best friend." An American's relationship to animals is, to paraphrase the author, part of our secret history.

A good read
Dog Years by Mark Doty, is a sensitive narrative about Mark's life with his two dogs, Beau and Arden, who were his companions during the illness and death of his partner Will and his subsequent life alone and finally with a new partner, Paul. The book touches on the effect of these labradors on Will's final days and describes Beau's sudden decline and death at a too-early age for a dog from a sudden illness. While sad, it is a touching tribute to these two dogs who so enhanced Mark's life.
