In 2005, Ghostly International sister label Spectral Sound celebrated its 25th release and fifth anniversary with a two-disc package containing an epic Ryan Elliott mix and a disc of unmixed tracks. Five years later, Spectral acknowledges another milestone in a fashion that is relatively low-key. Selected by label co-manager Elliott, Document is an unmixed disc set entirely in 2010, featuring a handful of cuts issued earlier in the year on vinyl, as well as exclusives and material from forthcoming releases. Nailing down the Spectral aesthetic is trickier than ever, exemplified by the tracks that open and close the disc. Hieroglyphic Being's "Got No Place to Go" brings unvarnished avant-garde house with bristly industrial friction, while Gadi Mizrahi's darkly debonair "She Only Looks at You" is a tantalizingly sustained fade-in with a one-note bassline and a hovering organ drone over a procession of jutting percussive accents. Other noteworthy contributions come from Mike Parker, whose hard acid techno enters at a boil prior to easing into a threatening simmer, and James T. Cotton, who supplies more of his frenetic jakbeat with hammering bass drums and torrents of synthetic handclaps. While the label's output continues to diversify, its quality control has not dipped. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi
