Words of Wisdom
Andrew Saul, Ph.D. (biologist) has nailed it with this book. Bottom line is that you definitely CAN "doctor yourself" by supplementing what is probably a poor diet with vitamins, a juicer, exercise, and homemade remedies instead of dangerous drugs and/or surgery. For instance, he recommends the amino acid L-Tryptophan for depression, and lists dietary sources. But he also writes, "...plenty of inexpensive vitamin C enables your body to convert dietary tryptophan into your own 5-HTP, and then on into serotonin."
When our young son started feeling nauseated every day (vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss), we ended up seeing 22 doctors over 2 years, and finding very little help. Many were specialists, "the best in the industry," prestigious doctors working in the best facilities in the world. After running every test they could think of, their response was that they didn't know what was causing the nausea. A naturopath did some lab tests for IgG food allergies (non-anaphylactic) and found that our son needed to eliminate several foods, the main one being gluten. Digestive enzymes were also needed. The nausea disappeared! We continue to have a naturopath order lab tests showing whether our son has sufficient amounts of certain vitamins. Conventional doctors only know how to prescribe dangerous drugs (which have frightening potential side effects) and surgery - they know little to nothing about nutrition and vitamins! Dr. Saul "gets it," and presents the data in a knowledgeable yet humorous style, backed up by references and suggestions for further reading. "Doctor Yourself" is a treasure-trove for people who are sick and tired of being sick and tired and who are finding little help from their doctors.
