Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), the bride who inexplicably materialized on the TARDIS at the end of the second season's emotional finale, returns in the fourth season and joins the Doctor (David Tennant) for new adventures across the space-time continuum. Donna, who had declined the Doctor's offer to be his next companion at the end of The Runaway Bride special, finds herself regretting that decision and takes to probing strange happenings in the hope of reconnecting with the Time Lord, which she does when each independently investigates a company that markets a diet pill with the ominous slogan, "The fat just walks away." From there, Donna and the Doctor go to ancient Pompeii, just ahead of what the Doctor calls Volcano Day, where they uncover a sinister plot that makes the historic eruption of Mount Vesuvius seem benign in comparison. The pair then take a trip far into the future, where they become involved in the liberation of a subservient race called the Ood, who return the favor with a cryptic warning about the Doctor's future. Former companion Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) finds herself compelled to call upon the Doctor when old foes, the Sontarans, turn up to tamper with Earth's atmosphere. Having already met William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens in previous seasons, the Time Lord and his companion continue the tradition of hobnobbing with literary giants by helping the celebrated novelist Agatha Christie (Fenella Woolgar) solve a murder mystery.
