For over 15 years The Jazz Members Big Band of Chicago has devoted itself to big band repertory, and they demonstrated their proficiency on this 11-cut session. The group played various arrangements perfectly, and the solos had authenticity and warmth. There were only two things that marred the proceedings; one was vocalist Frieda Lee, who sang with passion, but lacked the power and authority to make the lyrics her own. The other was style; the band reproduced classic voices so well that they lacked originality. Their mastery of the great classics was commendable, but it would be even nicer to hear something reflecting a contemporary vision.
