English summary: Printed editions of the writings of the Theravada Buddhism, still practiced today in Ceylon and Southeast Asia, generally originate from very recent palm leaf manuscripts produced in the 19th, and in some cases, in the second half of the 18th century in the Middle Indo-Aryan language Pali. However, in northern Thailand alone, the tradition of manuscripts goes back much further, beginning already in the late 15th century. Projects funded by the German Research Foundation and Foreign Office ensured the preservation of the most significant Pali manuscripts from northern Thailand on microfilm. Particularly noteworthy are the manuscripts from the small monastery Lai Hin near Lampang in the south of Chiang Mai, which are made available to researchers in Oskar von Hinuber's latest publication for the first time. Presenting a comprehensive introduction to the cultural context in which the manuscripts were created, von Hinuber subsequently describes the over 150 truly ancient documents in detail with references to the microfilm collection. The translation of the colophons also provides valuable information on monasteries and monks as well as on the historical geography, and also provides some details of not only cultural, but also economic history.
