Wahrend aus der alteren Zeit im wesentlichen Inschriftentrager bekannt sind, die in den Bereich der Kirchenausstattung gehoren - darunter ein Wandteppich und Wandmalereien mit umfangreichen Text-Bild-Programmen -, verlagert sich der Schwerpunkt der Inschriften mit der dichter werdenden Uberlieferung im 16. Jahrhundert von den Kirchen zum Bereich des burgerlichen Wohnbaus. Die in Lemgo zahlreich erhaltenen Staffelgiebelhauser und Fachwerkbauten aus der Zeit der Renaissance weisen ein reiches Repertoire an Hausinschriften auf, die neben Baudaten auch Bibelzitate und -paraphrasen sowie in Sentenzen und Sprichworter gefasste allgemeine Lebensweisheiten in lateinischer und deutscher Sprache enthalten. Darin reprasentiert sich das Lemgoer Burgertum ebenso wie in den Bild- und Inschriftenprogrammen des Rathauskomplexes, in denen die Bildungsinhalte der Renaissance in vielfaltiger Weise Ausdruck finden. Der chronologisch aufgebaute Katalogteil wird durch eine umfangreiche Einleitung und zahlreiche Abbildungen erganzt. Zehn Register erschliessen dem Leser das Material unter verschiedenen Gesichtspunkten.
