In a song by Meyer Helmund we have: "That tender song's sweet magic power, My heart has fairly captured." The first line of these quoted words are marked, f. Wrong. No suggestion of the song's tenderness, sweetness or "magic" (entrancing) power can be given by a forte delivery. We need not quote the music of the above. These f. and ff. marks in songs are greatly abused. Loud tones should never be coupled with tender emotion when it is personally felt. Let us make this clear. If the words are "You love me, and will love me forever," your feeling, that of the one loved, is a joyousness over the fact that you are. This may properly be expressed b C ff., quickened time, etc. Even then, be careful to express joy, not boastfulness. But, if the words are "I love thee," etc., here the sentiment, the emotion is your own, it is personal, it is tender, caressing, gentle, ardent, what you will, but surely not boisterous. In life, in the drama, in the whole art of reading this kind of love is always given in p. or pp. volume, stress indicating the passion. It was always a marvel to us to see and to hear how singers and composers both run riot with their f. and ff. characters in the delivery of personally experienced love. "I love thee!" sung ff.----seems ridiculous, as if screamed from the housetops, and implying "I love you, and I don't care who knows it." As long as "I love you" is chosen as a climax to...
