Another installment of hits from the 1960s and early 1970s, available in mixes and edits that are hard to come by on compact disc. It's all-over-the-map pop-rock, from the Mamas & the Papas' "Creeque Alley," Dobie Gray's "The 'In' Crowd," the Dixie Cups' "Chapel of Love," and Shirley Ellis' "The Name Game" to Argent's "Hold Your Head Up," Spiral Starecase's "More Today Than Yesterday," the Association's "Never My Love," and Steam's "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye." As far as really notable differences between the versions you might already have in your collection and the ones here, they're few; the most curious is the "censored" version of the Swingin' Medallions' "Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love"), with a couple mildly controversial lines changed to something more inoffensive. If you're really hankering after hearing the mono mix of Crazy Elephant's bubblegum hit "Gimme Gimme Good Lovin'" because, as the liner notes explain, "the guitar solo is much more prominent in the mix," you really need to get out of the house more. One hit here that's not anthologized too often is Les Crane's vapid spoken word-new age piece "Desiderata" ("listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story"), though it's hard to hear now without comparing it unfavorably to National Lampoon's brilliant satire of the song, "Deteriorata." ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
