In a word, it sounds great: Diamond was a terrific composer of strong-muscled and profoundly expressive symphonic music and his Symphony No. 2 is as great as the wartime symphonies of Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Vaughan Williams, or Martinu. The depth of the opening Adagio funebre, the force of the Allegro vivo, the intensity of the Andante espressivo, quasi adagio, and the overwhelming brilliance of the closing Allegro vigoroso are as compelling as the best American symphonic music...
