The billing of this CD is slightly inaccurate. Although Marley does appear on the majority of the tracks, these 1963-1966 cuts were released under the name of the Wailers, not Bob Marley & the Wailers, and some of the later selections were recorded without Marley (who moved to the U.S. for a while in 1966). Which isn't to say this isn't quality ska (moving towards the rocksteady sound on the later songs) that also sheds light on the roots of the music of Bob Marley and fellow Wailers Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. Although some of these songs have been reissued before, most of them were previously unavailable on CD, or are alternative takes or versions that were not overdubbed. The 19 tracks are quite varied and entertaining: sweet soul-influenced rockaballads ("Wages of Love"), solid straight-ahead ska ("Do You Feel the Same Way Too," "Dance With Me," "Do It Right"), the gospel cover "Let the Lord Be Seen in You," and one of the first Wailers songs to reflect Rastafarian beliefs, "I Stand Predominant" (written by Bunny Wailer and producer Coxsone Dodd). There are even versions of "White Christmas" and "What's New Pussycat?" Although it's not quite as essential as the two other most easily available early Marley/Wailers comps (One Love and The Birth of a Legend), it's almost as worthy, and sure to be of interest to anyone who enjoys those other two collections. The liner notes are extremely detailed, with track-by-track comments that even include many dates and quotes from Bunny Wailer -- a rarity in vintage reggae reissues, and a trend to be encouraged. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
