-1 jacket. This book is not typical of genealogy or history, but includes some of both. It is genealogical in that many of the men who lived around Fort Pitt in 1781-1782 are listed. It is historical in that new light is shed on the conditions on the Western Pennsylvania frontier late in our Revolutionary War. The war was finally being won in the East with French help. On the Western frontier the stealth war of the Indians was causing plenty of damage to the life and limb of the settlers. Many settlers were getting desperate and said so in the newly found petition. For family historians there are numerous sources of information about the 10, 000 or so people trying to live "west of the mountains." The particular events of history cited here are first: petitions of local people for the removal of Colonel Brodhead; second, definitive research on the 200+ men who killed 90-96 Christian men, women and children of Indian origins in early March, 1782; and finally; a previously unpublished petition with plenty of sources for further information, signed by all the white men living around Fort Pitt late in 1781. All names unfortunately are not readable, but they are important to family historians and are as accurate and complete as possible. The men expressed their desperation and asked for much more protection for their families. There is also a list of the Moravians murdered using some Indian names and some in English.
