"Over Sakhalin, five hours and 26 minutes after takeoff, KE007 was struck by two Anab heat-seeking missiles...Nine minutes later, the aircraft plunged into the Gulf of Tartary...There were no survivors." So begins the introduction to "Desired Track", Vol. I of the 2 volume set, a richly detailed, authoritative study the only book about the downing of KE007 to be based on unassailable navigational evidence. Vol. II, an exhaustive bibliography, including actual flight records and radar data made available to the authors by the Central Intelligence Agency and data turned over to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in 1993 by Russian President Boris Yeltsin. A multi-colored fold-out map plots all relevant data. What the evidence proves is that KE007 was flying a preplanned route designed to take it into Soviet airspace, almost certainly for intelligence-gathering. Allardyce and Gollin stress that their findings can be replicated.
