Seller's Description:
Very Good. Michael Joseph, Folio Miniatures Series, 1975; 1st edn. in laminated pictorial boards, in mint condition; 32pp illustrated introductory essay+16pp colour paintings, including Frith's; there is a pagination error pp34-39 are unnumbered then p40 is numbered 39; Derby Day is almost more of a national institution than the Derby itself. More than a century ago, the House of Commons was actually taking Derby Day off since the occasion was recognised as a holiday in the metropolis', and the Prime Minister allowed the day as a national fete with little demur. And it was truly national-the one holiday where even in the Victorian heyday classes did not matter, at least on the central rise, where carriages of all kinds were parked on the lower slopes, gypsies set up their booths at the top, and all moved freely together, the concentrated quintessence of the world'. This is the Derby Day that made Frith's name more famous, on the strength of that one great picture of his, than the whole of the rest of his life's work. It is the Derby Day to which Dickens would give thousands of words of description without remembering to record who won the race. Here, in word and picture, is a marvellous, nostalgic souvenir of an annual Occasion. Its magic has dwindled as cars replace carriages, crowds gather now round television sets, and the one-time incidence of unexplained family funerals' among truant employees has largely died out. Yet over half the nation still holds its breath for two and a half minutes; Derby Day will never be done. 7½x5"......We ship daily from our Bookshop.
