Its popularity in Germany is attested by the fact that now, after the death of its author in 1886, it is published at the rate of trom six to eight editions every year. The present publication is a reprint of the 257th edition ex cept that the Old spelling has been changed in accord ance with the most recent official rules. It has also been considered advisable in this American edition to omit Canto X, as well as a number of poems, as having very little connection with the story and only serving to retard the action, as we should say in dramatic parlance.
