Excerpt from Der Talisman: Dramatisches M???rchen in Vier Aufz???gen The poet Ludwig Fulda was born at Frankfurt am Main July 15, 1862. While still a child he developed the ambi tion which, though not realized, has dominated the greater part of his life to become a great writer of tragedy, a modern Shakespeare, if possible. On leaving the Gymnasium he was placed in the office of his father, a wealthy Jewish coal-dealer, but after a short unsuccessful service was allowed to enter the university Of Heidelberg to study German lit erature. It is characteristic of Fulda's genius that, though closer touch with the lives of great poets made him doubt his ability to write tragedy, he only worked the harder to make himself an intelligent student of the art. After study ing also at Berlin and Leipzig he finally in 1883 received the degree of Ph. D. With highest honors at Heidelberg. It was at Heidelberg that he attempted his first tragedy. Its hero was the unfortunate poet Christian Gunther (1695 who, like Fulda, was tormented by the inability to develop the genius he admired. Fulda threw his whole heart and soul into the writing of the tragedy, but he has never found a stage for it and has succeeded in publishing only a critical study of the life of his hero. On the other hand, Die Aufrichtigen, a oneact comedy which he had written merely as a recreation from the heavy work of the tragedy, met with immediate approval.
