Two decades after the fall of the Berlin wall, this book takes stock of the democratization processes in Central and Eastern Europe and the post-Soviet states. The chapters highlight the security-related aspects of the transition which relate, inter alia, to the aspect of NATO membership of Central and Eastern European states and their political and security relations with Russia. The case studies reveal that the commonly used classification of the political landscape into successful democracies - in Central and Eastern Europe on the one hand and largely autocratic regimes on the other - is too simplistic. To fully grasp the nature of the current challenges and the potential for further reforms, a more detailed analysis is needed.
