Ma Adriano IV privo definitivamente i fedeli del diritto elettorale, ed Alessandro III venne eletto nel 1159 senza la loro partecipazione. I Romani protestarono, ed unendosi ad alcuni cardinali dissidenti, elessero quattro antipapi. Questo scisma indusse Alessandro III a convocare nel 1179 un concilio generale, il terzo concilio di Laterano, che stabili in principio l'elezione de papi spettare esclusivamente ai cardinali.
