Following its early 2017 Naxos release of the neglected string quartets of Peter Racine Fricker, the Villiers Quartet turns to works by Frederick Delius and Edward Elgar, composers who are much more familiar to audiences than Fricker and whose string quartets have fared much better. Delius' String Quartet in E minor (1917) and Elgar's String Quartet in E minor (1918) were products of the First World War, though their late Romantic features -- long-breathed melodies, lush harmonies, and sentimental expressions -- reflect the fading of the old order. Delius' ardent work is presented in its final version, along with premiere recordings of two movements from the abandoned original version, as reassembled by Daniel Grimley, so listeners can compare them to discover various changes, though the movements' shapes, coloration, and expressions are quite similar.
